Just like the other games, Mario Kart DS doesn't just rely on good driving skills, but also heavily leans towards the proper usage of power-ups. New to Mario Kart DS is the ability to draft behind other racers, ultimately leading to a little juicy extra top speed for a few seconds. The turbo-building power slide makes a return from the N64 and GameCube games, and allows you to drift around corners, coming out into the straightaway with a little extra speed. A turbo start is possible at the beginning of all of the races in the game, and requires some timely acceleration. All eight racers (seven CPU guys) arrive at the starting grid in order to vie for pole position and take a win. A final selection and you're thrown headfirst into the action.
